Cherish and Share: Tavish's Story

In 2004, when Brittany and her family went to the Calgary Humane Society to find a new family member, it appeared initially that fate was working against them. They had their hearts set on an orange tabby, but the shelter seemed to be tabby-free. They visited with the other cats, but nothing clicked. Then, just as they were almost out the shelter door, they noticed a kennel tucked away in the back.

“Out of curiosity, we had to take a look, and there was our ginger boy, hidden away from everyone else and just waiting for us.” Nothing but fate could have brought them together, says Brittany.

They decided to rechristen their new pet. “When I was a child, my family and I rented a cabin in BC every summer, right on Lake Okanagan. We went there for 11 years until the resort was eventually sold and torn down to make room for a hotel. Every cabin had a name, and ours happened to be McTavish. We adopted him right after our final summer there, and we decided that we wanted to name him in memory of the place where we’d had so many amazing summers and made so many memories.”

It was a fitting name, because they would make many new memories with Tavish. He loved to spend time in the sun and they spent many an hour cuddling together. When it came to treats, Tavish loved toy mice—particularly ones that squeaked—and pork: “Ham, bacon, you name it…he would always be there, begging for a bite.”

Tavish lived a full and happy 15 years. His family chose to have his impression painted to match his beautiful orange fur, the same quality that had drawn them to him in the first place. His impression rests on a shelf in their living room, alongside his photo. He is dearly missed. “Over a lifetime of having cats no one has been quite as special as he was.”
