Cherish and Share: Pepper's Story

When Dana and Derek went looking for dogs at the Edmonton SPCA, they based their dog selection on unusual criteria—they decided to bring home the dog least likely to be adopted. They found that dog in Pepper. She was wary and untrusting of people, and she had a misaligned jaw people often mistook as a health defect. Dana and Derek knew right away that she was the one.

It took Pepper a while to warm up to her new home, but within a few years, Pepper’s fear and reluctance disappeared. It was a complete transformation. The dog that had once been wary and cautious now didn’t think twice before sticking her big head under your arm to ask for affection. “Her personality did a 180…People who met her when we first got her couldn’t believe it.”

A steady diet of love and care was all it took to turn Pepper’s life around. She thrived in her doting environment. Pepper loved all treats and Dana and Derek were quick to spoil her with carrots and Dentastix. Tug-O-War was her favourite game and she never tired of playing with her rope toy. At the end of the day, Pepper would curl up on Derek’s side of the bed.

One of Dana’s favourite stories about Pepper comes from a day when she was packing Derek leftover pizza for lunch. She left the kitchen to ask how much Derek wanted and Pepper snuck up behind her and swiped the pizza from the counter. But instead of eating it, she brought it to Derek and laid it in his lap. There wasn’t a tooth mark on it. “Pepper could have eaten the whole box of pizza, but instead she decided to ask for it,” Dana laughs.

Pepper lived to be 8 years old. She passed away on December 28, 2017. Dana and Derek selected Emerald as the colour for her impression because they had both met at Emerald Lake, BC. They display Pepper’s impression in a shadow box with photographs and her collar. It hangs on their living room wall because Pepper will have a place in their home, and in their hearts, always.
