BryAnne-story

Cherish and Share: BryAnne's Story

It was a cold, October evening in 2010 when Sarafina and a friend drove across the city to meet a litter of baby rabbits for sale. One of the kittens stood out immediately; he was the largest of the bunch and an irresistible fluffy brown. He hopped right over and snuggled into Sarafina. She knew right then that he was the one.

It took Sarafina a few weeks to settle on a name: Brian. It wasn’t until a few years later when Brian was at the vet for a check-up that she realized that “Brian” was an unusual choice. The veterinarian walked back into the waiting room, looking puzzled, and asked Sarafina if Brian was the rabbit he was examining. Sarafina confirmed that he was. The veterinarian then invited her into the room where Brian was lounging comfortably on a table. He picked Brian up and asked Sarafina to take a close look.

That was the day that Brian became BryAnne.

BryAnne’s name may have changed, but the rich and happy life she led did not. She spent many a day being hand-fed bananas, warming herself on the dryers at the laundromat while Sarafina did laundry, and playing with her cat toys. There were the occasional mishaps too. In the early days, Sarafina and BryAnne would take naps together. This cuddling time came to an abrupt end after the time Sarafina woke up to discover that BryAnne had chewed through the centre of her bangs. “I had a very awkward comb-over for months,” she laughs.

Sarafina’s favourite moments were those sitting outside, quietly reading, with BryAnne in her lap. “She kept me grounded in so many ways,” says Sarafina. “She saw me through many ups and downs. Career changes, moves and broken hearts. She was the one I reached to at night when anxiety had taken over—when I felt like I didn’t know what to do; I could pick her up, cuddle her, and be reminded that everything was okay.”

BryAnne lived to be nine years old. Sarafina selected Light Brown for her impression to represent the colour of BryAnne’s fur. She’s still deciding how to display it but plans to find a spot by BryAnne’s playhouse to honour her playful spirit.
