The pets of our childhood leave lasting impressions on our lives. Sparkles and her little girl, Rowen, spent more than seven happy years making memories together.
Sparkles became a beloved companion in 2011 when an Edmonton-based family decided to bring her home as a pet for their daughter. She was gleefully given her name by Rowen, who took inspiration from the glitter on her hand at the time of the adoption.
The two of them loved to spend time together, whether it was playing outside in Sparkles’ wire pen, building forts with books and cardboard boxes in Rowen’s room, or simply cuddling. Rowen enjoyed every part of taking care of her pet, from feeding her to petting her to giving her treats of guinea pig sticks and red peppers. “Sparkles loved to nap in her little house with lots of bedding,” says Rowen. “I always made sure there was extra bedding in there.”
Rowen wasn’t Sparkles’ only friend through; she and family cat, Nova, got along well too. “They would always sniff each other when Sparkles was out of her cage.”
Now, Sparkles’ impression rests by the window above Rowen’s bed. Rowen chose the colour, Coral, for the background because of how pretty it looked and to honour Sparkles’ girly personality and namesake. It’s a memento to last a lifetime, reminding Rowen of all the precious memories they shared—a fitting tribute to the bond between a girl and her guinea pig.
